This came about as a suggestion from publishers when releasing her short stories, as it would make more money. Not only was she an impressive talent when it came to poetry, but she was also a celebrated playwright and opera writer, creating works such as ‘ Aria da capo,’ ‘ The Lamp and the Bell,’ and ‘The King’s Henchman.’ Despite her success, a lot of her verse and prose were written under the pen name Nancy Boyd. Many to this day consider her the greatest American sonneteer of all time. ![]() While her lyrics and prose were somewhat radical for the time period, she still grounded herself in the traditional rules of poetry. ![]() Millay was known for her complex writing style, sometimes inviting the reader to try and decipher a deeper meaning. Well-renowned critic Edmund Wilson even went as far as to say that she was “one of the only poets writing in English in our time who have attained to anything like the stature of great literary figures.” She is considered to be one of the most important poets of the 20th century. Her home is now the site of the seven-acre Millay Colony for the Arts, and she has recently been named one of history’s most important LGBTQ icons. She garnered fame not only in New York City, where she built her career, but she made a name for herself worldwide. Vincent Millay’s reputation has only grown over the years. ![]()
